Home of Chas Kohlman
A promotional card advertising the prosperous life of Chas Kohlman, a Northern Wisconsin farmer. The image at the center of the card shows the Kohlman family sitting outside their home, next to two cows. The text reads, "Home of Chas Kohlman. near Butternut, Ashland County, Wisconsin. - In looking at this picture one cannot help being impressed by a certain air of prosperity and contentment which it suggests. This family made its begging upon their land several years ago having no money. The fertility of the soil and the good prices which prevailed made it possible for them to pay for their land and improvements thereon, and to accumulate some stock and other personal property. In the winter time Mr. Kohlman found it profitable to sell wood from his land to charcoal kilns at Butternut. He not only sees a profit in farming, but also makes a good thing from his timber." The reverse side of the card reads, "Count your pennies to be sure, but it is perhaps more to the point to place yourself in a position where you can count out to yourself and not to your landlord or some other creditor. A man of limited means cannot, in these times, farm high priced lands and make annual profits. Usually the balance is on the other side. The amount of one year's rent in the old established districts will buy a beautful piece of farming land in Taylor, Price, or Ashland Counties, Wisconsin. These lands are timbered with the finest growth of hardwood and hemlock, all of which is salable. The soil is of the best in Wisconsin. Good neighbors, good schools and church privilege." |
