Betty is in charge of the Lazy Y ranch, and she is friendly with Calumet Marston, whose father Jim had put her in charge of the ranch while Clayton was absent. In the story Betty uses her rifle to wound Tom Taggart, a squatter, when he shoots Clayton in an ambush.
