Girl in Iron Lung

A nurse holding a mirror so that the photographer can see the face of a girl in an iron lung. Hanging from the machine are a number of greeting cards. The caption on the back of the photograph reads: "Stricken with polio (she neglected to get her Salk shots) Flossie Rogers still managed a smile as she looked at the world through the mirror of her iron lung in June, 1957. So thankful for the care she got from the nurses at County Hospital in Mobile, Ala., Flossie vowed to devote her life to helping the sick if she ever got back on her feet. Helped with funds from the March of Dimes, Flossie did recover, and today is working to become a nurse at the same hospital." |
