This map of the Bentonville, N.C., battlefield illustrates the positions of the Union and the Confederate troops, roads, rivers, vegetation, and the names of residents. The battle of Bentonville, North Carolina, took place on March 19-20, 1865, as the Union troops advanced north toward Virginia. Evenly matched forces of about 17,000 soldiers traded attacks for 24 hours until the Confederates retreated. The 3rd Wisconsin Infantry, 12th Wisconsin Infantry, 16th Wisconsin Infantry, 21st Wisconsin Infantry, 22nd Wisconsin Infantry, 25th Wisconsin Infantry, 26th Wisconsin Infantry, 31st Wisconsin Infantry, and 32nd Wisconsin Infantry regiments and 5th Wisconsin Light Artillery and 12th Wisconsin Light Artillery batteries took part in the Battle of Bentonville, which occurred March 19-21, 1865. |
