The medal (1955.1283) was presented to Menominee Chief Chawanon by Quebec Provincial Governor Frederick Haldimand in 1778. The medal was reportedly collected from a Menominee Indian by M.M. Davis sometime during the American Civil War. Davis donated the medal and the commission to the Society in 1881. This style of the George III medal first arrived in the Americas in the summer of 1776. Medals were often presented to Native American leaders in an attempt to woo them as allies. |
