"A heart attack forced Walter Lofblad, a Cumberland farmer, to quit working so he started whittling miniature Milwaukee Braves out of basswood. It took the 58-year-old farmer almost two months to finish the starting lineup, manager Charlie Dressen, an umpire, and a spectator. Lofblad picked up the carving 'bug' in the logging camp era and has been whittling animals, Indians, chains and sports performers ever since." Published August 22, 1960 possibly in Milwaukee Journal. |
