The original typewritten caption reads: "Photograph I-373-U -- 'Tractor-driven machine speeds rough work of reforestation. The timber-supply problem is primarily a land problem. Forest land should produce timber crops. The United States contains 470,000,000 acres of land which foresters classify as forest land and which will not be needed for other agricultural crops. If all this acreage were producing trees at maximum capacity the United States would have no serious timber supply problem. Unfortunately, at least 80,000,000 acres out of the 470,000,000 is in a non-productive condition. In fact, much of this idle forest land must be artificially planted if it is ever to grow trees again.' From 'Forestry Facts,' published by the Forest Service, the United States Department of Agriculture. In the accompanying illustration is shown how a powerful McCormick-Deering 15-30 farm tractor may be used to speed this big job of reforestation in the rough going that usually prevails in such work. It is shown operating a heavy reforesting machine designed to plant two rows of trees at a time on 6-foot centers and at a rate of more than 2,000 trees an hour or more than 10,000 trees a day. With ample power always available, this outfit may be operated over rough hilly terrain and even through accompanying illustration was made, it was being demonstrated in the Sciota Trail State Forest before members of the Ohio Valley section of the Society of American Foresters." |
