Nelson was Polk County farm leader and a Progressive member of the Wisconsin Assembly. In 1936 he ran for vice-president on the Socialist Party ticket with Norman Thomas. Nelson's nomination in 1934 was considered a step by the urban-based Socialists to attract Wisconsin farmers.
