River Steamer Chippewa on West Eau Claire Levee
The river steamer Chippewa drawn up alongside shore on the West Eau Claire Levee. The steamer was built by Captain E.E. Heerman at La Crosse in 1866. Used mainly between Eau Claire and Read's Landing, Minnesota. It was destroyed by fire while in winter quarters at Rumsey's Landing on the Chippewa River in 1871. Men and children are standing on all three of the decks. |

The image appeared in the October section of the 1985 Wisconsin Historical Calendar. Description from Way's Packet Directory 1848-1983, copyright 1983. See page 86. Sternwheel, packet, wood, rig and class undetermined. 74 tons. Ran five seasons tri-weekly La Crosse-Eau Claire. In July 1870 the arrival of the railroad ended that, and she did some rafting. She was moored winter 1870-1871 at Rumsey's Landing on the Chippewa River. Burned there on Jan. 21, 1871, along with the JOHNNY SMOKER, both owned by H.S. Rumsey, La Crosse. |
