Peter Johnson (Ellestad)
Head and shoulders oval studio portrait of Peter Johnson, a private in C Company, 15th Wisconsin Infantry. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Rochester, Wisconsin. On October 16, 1861, he enlisted at Waterford and was mustered into service at Madison, Wisconsin on December 02, 1861, at the age of 23. He was taken prisoner at La Vergne, Tennessee on December 29, 1862, but the parole was not legal, resulting in Johnson returning to active duty on January 13, 1863, at Murfessboro, Tennessee. He was captured again at Charleston, Tennessee on December 28, 1863. On June 29, 1863, he was set to a parole camp at St. Louis Missouri to be exchanged. Johnson was mustered out of service on June 10, 1865 in Madison, Wisconsin. |
