On the back of the card: Kyrie Eleison, Page from the Missale Pataviense. Vienna, 1512. The metropolitan Museum of Art, Harris Brisbane Disk Fund, 1928. The card was sent to James Aronson, a journalist and founder of the communist leaning "National Guardian". The card was from Alger Hiss, an American lawyer, civil servant, businessman, author, and lecturer. He was involved in the establishment of the United Nations both as a U.S. State Department and UN official. Hiss was accused of being a Soviet spy in 1948 and convicted of perjury in connection with this charge in 1950. |
