Making Grey Iron Wheels for Mowers at International Harvester Foundry | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
The original caption reads as follows: "Harvesting machines are made largely of iron and steel, consequently foundries, blacksmith shops, machine shops and forge rooms predominate. This picture is taken in one of the numerous grey iron foundries where parts of harvesting machines are made. It shows a section devoted to casting mower wheels. This foundry produces over 200,000 of these wheels a year. This particular foundry annually converts 65,000 tons of pig iron into castings, numbering 20,000,000 pieces annually. A thousand men are employed therein, and the best possible type of molding machines and devices are used to make the molds in which the parts are cast. The foundries are equipped for handling the molten metal and castings with the greatest facility and without unnecessary heavy hand lifting."
