Old Abe Glass Compote
Old Abe covered glass compote made by the Crystal Glass Company of Bridgeport, Ohio. Exhibited at the Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia in 1876 where the real Old Abe was a major attraction as well. The set included three sizes of compotes, a covered butter-dish, a covered sugar bowl, a spoon holder, a cream pitcher and a salt dish. Only the compotes, butter dish and sugar bowl had the eagle finial. The other pieces carried out the pattern with the rope and stylized claws. The rope is believed to represent the cord by which Old Abe was fastened to the perch at the top of the staff. This is housed in the collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin museum with the accession number 1961.139a. |
