Old Abe Composite
Composite paste-up intended to represent "Old Abe," eagle mascot of the Eighth Wisconsin Regiment in the Civil War with his bearer. At the Northwest Sanitary Fair in Chicago, 1865, the bearer was John F. Hill. This image consists of a cut-out of the eagle superimposed on a wood-engraving of the figures. The image shows three Union soldiers, one holding the American flag, one standing on the left, and one holding Old Abe (John F. Hill). |
