The signs on the buildings in the background read: "Hinegardners' Minerals, Jewelry, Gifts," "Bent Elbow Restaurant - Dining Room, Buffet Lunch," and Mercantile; Gift Shop. Cotton Candy, Film." The Bent Elbow was built in 1907 as Fattor's Tremount Saloon. This photograph originally appeared in the Volume 56, Number 7 issue of "International Harvester World" magazine. The magazine caption reads, "The ubiquitous International Scout has turned up in more World stories than any other current IH product. In World's pages, Scouts have hauled surveyors through bog-like thickets in Maine, helped smash moonshine stills in Tennessee, transported TV cameras into a hurricane's eye, towed 'parakiters' across frozen lakes. The proliferation of Scout stories has come about largely because of the vehicle's special versatility. In four years it has not only become the largest selling utility vehicle of its kind but has found itself in all sorts of photograph-able situations. Among them: a weekend outing over Colorado trails; a unique way of illustrating the value of seat belts; a portable plastic showroom; a check-in at San Francisco's Mark Hopkins hotel." The handwritten text on the back of the photograph reads: "IH World 7/65. GW-23. Pp.24-25." |
