Wigfall on His Promised Descent on Washington

Illustration of the head of Louis Wigfall, on the body of an Indian with tomahawk in hand. The caption reads: "WIGFALL on his promised descent on Washington." This is a barb at the provincial culture of Texas. Envelopes with a Texas subject were rare. Wigfall was born in Edgefield, South Carolina, practiced law and became involved in politics before joining a law practice in Texas to escape his reputation for violence. He was elected to the U.S. Congress and supported secession, being present at the siege on Sumter and serving as aide to Beauregard. Red ink on beige envelope. Illustration on left side, printed on envelope, mounted on a decorative border and collected in an album. |
