That Feed Won't Do
Soldier-farmer, "Jeffy" (Jefferson) Davis, in full uniform with a straw hat is giving feed (bonds) to a sow (the Confederacy). The sow is in turn feeding its piglets (the individual states of the Confederacy). Three piglets (the border states) are on the wrong side of the fence. Two of the piglets, Maryland and Missouri, are being attacked by two dogs (United States). The third piglet, Kentucky, looks on forlornly knowing that it will be attacked next by the dogs. Black ink on yellow envelope, illustration is in upper left and center. Mounted on a decorative border and collected in an album. |
