The original typewritten caption reads: "An easy and inexpensive method of getting rid of stumps. Mr. O.K. Hubbard is clearing this field and expects to plant it in potatoes. By digging around the stump so the fire can be started below the surface, they are burned out deep enough that what is left does not interfere with plowing. Near Mobile, Ala."
