David Glasgow Farragut
Engraved vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Vice Admiral David Glasgow Farragut. In December 1861 he led the New Orleans expedition, fought at Vicksburg to open up the Mississippi River, and attacked Port Hudson. In August 1864 Farragut led a fleet against Mobile, Alabama in which the fleet took on a collection of Confederate ironclads and gunboats. Farragut was promoted to vice admiral on December 21, 1864 and to admiral on July 25, 1866. He remained on active duty until his death of a stroke at the age of 69 in August 1870. |
