Elevated view from hill toward a lumberyard, with small workers' homes on the left. A dirt path and wooden fence surround the lumberyard, which is filled with stacks of lumber. Railroad tracks are around the yard. A small grouping of outbuildings and the main complex, with silo, smokestack, and chimneys are in the background. |

The Northern Lumber Co., also known as the The Cloquet Lumber Co., worked in conjunction with the University of Minnesota in establishing a school forest, called the Cloquet Forestry Center, in 1909. The company deeded many uncut acres to the school. The 1918 fire in Cloquet devastated the area and consequently the company, a large employer in the area. |
