Waist-up vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Lieutenant General John Bell Hood. He entered the Confederate army as a colonel and was quickly promoted to Brigadier General of the Texas brigade. For his actions at the Battle of Gaines's Mills he was promoted to Brigadier General. He served in the Battles of Second Manassas (Second Bull Run), Antietam, and Gettysburg. In September 1863 he was ordered to Tennessee to reinforce Confederate forces at the Battle of Chickamauga. In July 1864 Confederate President Jefferson Davis placed Hood in command of the Army of Tennessee. Hood was repeatedly defeated at the Battles of Atlanta, Franklin, and Nashville. Following these defeats Hood was relieved from command. |
