Edwin Vose Sumner
Seated, waist-up carte-de-visite portrait of Major General Edwin Vose Sumner wearing officer dress uniform. At the start of the Civil War President Lincoln promoted him to Brigadier General and assigned him to the command of the Department of the Pacific. In March 1862 he was attached to the Army of the Potomac, seeing fighting during the Peninsular Campaign. For his actions during the campaign he was appointed to Major General of volunteers. Before he relieved himself of command, he also fought in the Battles of Antietam and Fredericksburg. |
