A Fleet of Admirals
Fleet Admiral William D. Leahy (center) posed with several other World War II naval officers: (far left) Rear Admiral Ross McIntyre, personal physician to the President, (and beginning third from the right) Rear Admiral Chester Wood, Rear Admiral Wilhelm Friedell, and Rear Admiral Wilson Brown. The men on either side of Leahy are unidentified. Leahy, who served as military chief of staff to President Roosevelt during World War II and who was promoted to fleet admiral in 1944, was the first officer to hold a five-star rank. Leahy was raised in Ashland, Wisconsin. |
