Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Major General Philip Henry Sheridan. For his actions in the war he was able to quickly rise through the ranks, starting as a captain in May 1861, followed in May 1862 to Colonel of the 2nd Michigan Cavalry, then in July 1862 to Brigadier General, and then finally in January 1863 he was promoted to Major General. Once a Major General, he became Commander of the Army of Shenandoah, leading a division at the Battles of Chickamauga and Chattanooga. In the Wilderness Campaign he led a cavalry corps of the Army of the Potomac. |
