Montauk Lighthouse

View across water toward the Montauk Lighthouse, in Montauk Point State Park, a U.S. Government Reservation on Long Island. Several people are playing on the beach below. George Washington signed the presidential order in 1792 to have this lighthouse created. Construction started in June of 1796, and by November of that year it was completed making it the oldest in New York State. The last lighthouse keeper left the lighthouse in 1987 due to automation. However, the lighthouse is still an active aid to navigation. It is currently run and maintained by the Montauk Historical Society. The lighthouse stands at the easternmost point of Long Island. When many immigrants were coming to America back in the late 1920s and 1930s, this was usually the very first glimpse of it they saw. |
