In February 1917 Bacon would be condemned to death by the British for being a German spy. That sentence was commutted for his testimony against German agents in New York where Bacon pleaded guilty, served one year and a day in prison, and paid a one dollar fine. About this episode, Bacon wrote: "It was nothing but a fantastic stunt designed to produce an exclusive story on espionage, if I had gotten away with it." [Herbert O. Yardly, The American Black Chamber (1931), p. 70.] |
