The fifteen-year-old silent film actress Mary Miles Minter stands beside a two-seat roadster automobile looking at the director James Kirkwood sitting at the wheel. A woman sits at the entrance to the house behind them, perhaps Charlotte Shelby, Minter's mother. Minter's career was shadowed by scandal, including an affair with the 42-year-old Kirkwood in 1916 and a connection with the unsolved murder of director William Desmond Taylor in 1922. Original caption: "Every morning, James Kirkwood, Miss Minter's director, motors to her home and drives her to the studio." |
