Micaiah was the son of Samuel Fairfield, Jr. He was born July 5, 1823, in Pittsfield, Vermont, and attended Oberlin College in Ohio from 1845-46. He enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant on July, 8 1862 in Company Ford's Independent Cavalry Regiment of Illinois. He transferred to Company L, 15th Illinois Cavalry, on December 25, 1862, and was promoted to Major on April 22, 1863. He also received his commission in Company S, 1st Alabama Cavalry, on April 22, 1863.
