At the time the Civil War broke out, Henry’s uncle George Houghton was operating Houghton’s Photographic Hall, whose “commodious and pleasant” rooms were located above a furniture store across Main Street from the popular Brattleboro House. Houghton was eager to serve the Union, but ill health prevented him from enlisting as a soldier. So he ordered this custom-designed traveling photo-tent, which doubled as living quarters, and set off in October 1861 to document Vermont’s troops in battle. |
