Published in Wisconsin State Journal August 27, 1950 "Spelvin" was working on his thesis Isolation of a Bacteriophage Against Some of the Root-Nodule Organisms and his professor objected to his appearance in stage performances fearing it would interfere with his research, hence the use of a pseudonym. Per research by David Null at U.W. Archives, the student was Felix E. Wasserman. He got his undergrad at UW-Madison in 1949 in agricultural bacteriology (he's only in the directories from his sophomore year on, so that's consistent with the one year at Vermont from the Wisconsin State Journal article), and his MS in the same subject in 1950. Wassermann went on to become a doctor of Microbiology and Immunology at New York Medical College, so I guess the acting didn't hurt. |
