Small Island

Elevated view of a small, gravelly island in Lake Michigan. Caption on photograph reads, "Green Bay shore with small gravely island. This is very likely the precise spot where Jean Nicolet came ashore to see the Indians, the first white man to set foot in Wisconsin. Exposure from the middle of the cleft in the steep bank leading down to the shore; if we accept that the Indian village was located on top of the bank or bluff at approximately this point, this cleft would be the natural passage up from the shore, or approach to the village." |
