Exterior view of park in front of the Gilbert M. Simmons Public Library, with the Soldiers and Sailors monument. The library opened in 1900 and was funded with a gift of $150,000 from G.M. Simmons. Atop Soldiers and Sailors monument is the likeness of Nike, the Greek mythological winged goddess of victory. The figure holds an olive branch in her right hand to symbolize peace, and a laurel wreath in her left hand representing heroism and sacrifice made in war. The monument honors the Kenosha County men who served in the Union forces of the Civil War. The monument was dedicated on May 30, 1900. The Simmons Library opened to the public in July, 1900. |
