Viroqua Hero
Vernon county farmer Edwin Lerum became the first recipient of a new Wisconsin award for heroism in traffic safety when Governor Rennebohm presented him the citation. Lerum is credited with saving two lives from a car accident that happened in front of his farm on Highway 14 near Viroqua on May 7, 1949. Two cars collided head-on. Lerum removed six unconscious teenagers from the flaming wrecks. Four later died from their injuries. The group portrait of the award ceremony shows Mrs. Lerum and their daughter, Arlene looking on at left as Edwin Lerum, center, receives the award presented by Gov. Rennebohm and R.C. Salisbury, director of the safety division of the state motor vehicle department. |
