Woman with Copper Tubing for Torpedo
A woman wearing a hat, protective gloves, and safety glasses uses a tool to bend copper tubing used in making aircraft torpedoes at an International Harvester Company factory. The original caption reads: "International Harvester developed an important time-saving technique for the bending of copper tubing used in the torpedo. It is one of the most important contributions the Company made to the mass production of torpedoes. Large tubes, which are to be cold bent, are filled with silica sand before bending. Plugs are inserted in each end of the tube to keep the sand in place. This photograph shows a tube after it has been filled with sand and with the ends plugged." |
