Full-length studio portrait in front of a painted backdrop of a European American man, and two Ho-Chunk women. The man is wearing a military hat and suit jacket, vest, and tie, and the women are wearing long necklaces and ear bobs. Identified as non-Ho-Chunk Charlie Saunders with his Ho-Chunk wife Mary Eagle (ChaUkShePaRooEWinKah) and her daughter, Annie Davis Bigsoldier White Rogue (KeeReeJayWinKah). Saunders served in the Civil War as a private in Company B of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry and was twice a prisoner of war. The first time, he was captured in Bloomfield, Missouri, and released in exchange for a Confederate prisoner. He was captured again on July 30, 1864, and held at the infamous Andersonville Prison. Saunders is wearing the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) emblem on his hat. Saunders spoke the Ho-Chunk language and was close to the Ho-Chunk community, but it is not known whether he received Ho-Chunk warrior privileges. |
