Full-length studio portrait of an elderly Ho-Chunk man posing sitting. He is wearing a suit jacket, vest with watch fob, trousers, and a hat with a United States army insignia. Identified as Civil War veteran James Bird (WeeJukeKah or MaKeSucheKaw). The emblem on his hat is made of two crossed arrows, the insignia of a Civil War Indian scout. James Bird was a private with Company A of the Omaha Scouts, a Civil War outfit consisting of 6 white officers and 72 Ho-Chunk soldiers. |
