Donated by Brother Joseph Dutton (1843-1931) of Janesville, Wisconsin, who served as a priest at the Kalaupapa Leper Colony at Kalawao on the Hawaiian island of Molokai beginning in 1886. At the time of donation, Brother Dutton wrote, the shell "was used as holy water font by Father Damien in his old church at Kalawao near the entrance. It was there in use by him and by the lepers in general when I came to the settlement in July 1886, and apparently had been so used for many years. Father Damien had been here for 13 yrs. and lived 3 years longer. Died April 15, 1889. It was probably in that year I removed the shell and made different arrangements." |
