Processing Sisal Fiber at a Twine Mill
Factory worker standing behind a machine to process sisal fiber, possibly at the McCormick Twine Mill. There are safety posters on the back wall. Original caption reads: "Combing the sliver. This view from above shows a sliver on slow and fast chains of the fifth spreader or combing machine. The pin reel in the center presses fiber into the combing pins for more effective combing by the fast chain. The long slivers or streams of fiber continue to get smaller, straighter, and more even as they pass from one combing machine to another. There are eight combing operations in IH twine manufacture, to assure straightening the sliver as desired-for a smooth, even-running, uniform product." |
