The construction of this building was supervised by UW Professor of Engineering Allan D. Conover who also maintained a private civil engineering practice in Madison. One of his part-time employees was young sophomore student, Frank Lloyd Wright. In Wright's An Autobiography, he later recalled, "...(i)t was with Professor Conover, in that practice of his, that...[I] really learned most." Under Conover's direction Wright played a minor role in the construction of the new Science Hall. "[I] was entrusted with the working out of some steel clips to join the apex of the trusses of the main tower room... They wouldn't go together and the workmen, disgusted, left them hanging up there against the sky by the few bolts that would go in. It was dead of winter--only the iron beams of the floors were in place in the floor levels below. All was slippery with ice, but [I] went up there, climbing the lattice on the chords of the trusses to the very top, with nothing between [me] and the ground but the forest of open steel beams." |
