Refugees at a Displaced Persons Camp Celebrate a Soccer Victory

Refugees at a Displaced Persons camp celebrate a soccer victory over another D.P. camp team; Germany. Saul Sorrin was interviewed as part of the Wisconsin Survivors of the Holocaust Interviews project. Sorrin, born in New York in 1919, applied in 1940 for a position with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). He worked with Holocaust survivors as a supply officer for UNRAA team 560 at the Displaced Persons camp Neu Freimann Siedlung in Germany and later, at General Dwight D. Eisenhower's recommendation, Sorrin became the Area Director of the International Refugee Organization based at the Wolfratshausen DP camp in Bad Kissingen. When asked about this image, Sorrin revealed, "A victory toast. We had football players, we had a league among the Jewish DP camps. Soccer was very, very popular. They played with great enthusiasm. Hundreds, thousands of people came out to watch and then after the players would repair to the nearest invalidn bar and toast their victory. Great spirit. But look at these faces. Here's a man in the middle there with a toothache or something, he's got a thing around his--the Jews had awfully bad teeth, terrible. We set up clinics, you know for the JDC. We had our own clinics then we set up JDC clinics." Interview by Jean Loeb Lettofsky and David Mandel, March 3, 1980. |
