G.A.R. Soldiers Home
A man is sitting on a horse-drawn mower and posing in front of a building with the words "G.A.R./Soldiers Home/of NY" imprinted in brick on the front facade. There is a capital letter "B" above the main entrance to the building. In front of the building is a statue of a soldier sitting atop what is presumably a fountain, and the lawn surrounding the fountain has been mowed so that the letters "NYSS AND S" can be seen in the grass. Though difficult to see, several men in suits are standing behind the fountain, in front of the building. The G.A.R. was the Grand Army of the Republic, a group formed in the late 1800s to provide support and services for Civil War veterans. Several soldiers homes were founded, including one in Bath, NY in 1877. In 1878, the home was renamed the New York State Soldiers and Sailors Home (presumably represented by the letters on the front lawn). |
