Refugees in a Food Warehouse at a D.P. Camp
Refugees stand behind supplies in a food warehouse at a displaced persons camp; Germany. Saul Sorrin was interviewed as part of the Wisconsin Survivors of the Holocaust Interviews project. Sorrin, born in New York in 1919, applied in 1940 for a position with the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA). He worked with Holocaust survivors as a supply officer for UNRAA team 560 at the Displaced Persons camp Neu Freimann Siedlung in Germany and later, at General Dwight D. Eisenhower's recommendation, Sorrin became the Area Director of the International Refugee Organization based at the Wolfratshausen DP camp in Bad Kissingen. When asked about this image, Sorrin revealed, "This is the food. They portioned in the food warehouse in one of the camps, food distribution. Now food was cooked, wherever possible, in the individual family units if there was a family. For those who did not have a family we had communal kitchens and these [biksn] or cans, [büksn] of food were distributed as part of a regular worked-out ration. We had dieticians who planned the food distribution according to the UN calorie counts. Each person came with a different colored card which described the number of calories he was entitled to based on whether he was a hard worker or a not so hard worker or a child or whatever. The food came from the German economy mostly and it was supplemented by the United Nations with foods purchased elsewhere. Canned fish for example would come from Sweden, Norway." Interview by Jean Loeb Lettofsky and David Mandel, March 3, 1980. |
