The Charles Evans Hughes Alliance Tour

Women who make up the Hughes Alliance, led by Mrs. Harry Payne Whitney, daughter of Cornelius Vanderbuilt Sr., pose on the back of a train draped with bunting and Charles Evans Hughes banners. There is a sign that reads "Women's 'Hughes Campaign' Special". Hughes ran for president on the Republican ticket in 1916. "Determined that the power of women shall be felt, the national Hughes alliance arranged for a special train to carry 25 women of prominence into 31 states and more than 100 cities, in October 1916 in the interests of Hughes' campaign. Among those invited to participate were Mary Antin, Ella Flagg Young, Edna Ferber, Gertrude Atherton, Inez Gilmore, Mary Roberts Rhinehart, Mary Shaw and Zona Gale." from brief article in Wis State Journal 9-6-1916 p. 3 |
