Republican Ticket
Republican Party ticket distributed in Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, in support of the candidacy of Benjamin Harrison and his running mate Levi P. Morton. State level names of note on the ticket include Lucius Fairchild, a former governor running as elector-at-large; William Dempster Hoard, running for Governor; and Nils P. Haugen, who was running for Congress. Also interesting at the bottom of the ticket is Ada J. Martin, the candidate for County Superintendent of Schools. Beginning in 1880 women in Wisconsin could hold school elective office, although they could not vote in those elections until 1886. In Eau Claire County, women (and sometimes even married women) held an iron-clad grip on that position. Ada Martin lost, the only Republican on the county slate to do so, but she was defeated by another woman. |
