Victorian-Style House Gutted by Fire

A large Victorian-style house gutted by a fire. Ladders are leaning up on the sides, reaching up many different levels. Two people are on the roof spraying water, and hoses are spread over the lawn. Icicles are hanging from the ladder rungs and parts of the exterior. A fire engine is parked on the street on the right side. One of the street signs reads: "W. Wisconsin Avenue". |

The house was the home of H.H. Rockwell and was located at the southeast corner of Spring and 17th Streets. It was designed by Edward Townsend Mix. The home was later bought by bank owner L.M. Alexander. By the 1930's, when this fire occurred, it was a tenement. At the time the house was built, the street was called Spring St. The name later changed to Grand Avenue, then to W. Wisconsin Avenue. |
