Wilkinson and Braden in Handcuffs

Frank Wilkinson and Carl Braden at the time of their surrender to federal authorities. Both men had refused to testify to before the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC), based on the First Amendment rights, about their Communist associations. Their surrender came about after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected their First Amendment challenge. Wilkinson went on to establish the National Committee against Repressive Legislation which is credited in part with the eventual dissolution of HUAC. |
