Eddie Carthan Victory Party
Victory celebration for Eddie Carthan, the black activist mayor of Tchula, Mississippi. Carthan was convicted on charges of robbery and murder in 1981. This conviction appeared to many to be an attempt by the local white power structure to oust him from office, and a national campaign was waged to support his appeal. National civil rights leader C.T. Vivian can be seen here speaking at the celebration of Carthan's release in 1982. Anne Braden of the Southern Organizing Committee (SOC), which took a leading role in overturning the conviction, is seated at the right. Carthan and his family are seated with their backs to the camera. |
