From back of photograph: "In the years 1919-1921, the Finnish Socialist Federation was for the second time overtaken by schism, this time over Communism. All of the Wisconsin chapters withdrew from the American Socialist Party and became affiliated with the newly-founded Finnish Workers' Federation. In 1929, the Federation had 9 chapters in the state. However, in 1929-31, a third rupture occurred, fought chiefly over the control of the co-operatives. Those supporting the Communist Party in time found themselves members of a Finnish section of the International Workers Order. The others, outnumbering the Communists, have continued as independent organizations or have lost their identity in the co-operative movement. This hall is controlled by the non-Communist elements. Throughout the state, the working class movement is swiftly drawing to an end; societies are dissolving and membership rolls dropping." |
