Albert Emmonson
Quarter-length oval portrait of Albert Emmerson, a sergeant in Company C, 15th Wisconsin Infantry, in uniform and holding a revolver across his chest. The following information was obtained from the Regimental and Descriptive Rolls, Volume 20: He resided in Norway, Wisconsin. On October 11, 1861, he enlisted at Madison, Wisconsin. He was mustered into service at Madison, Wisconsin on December 2, 1862, at the age of 18. When he was mustered into service Albert was appointed to the rank of corporal. In October 1863, he was detached to serve as a guard with a supply train going to Stevenson, Alabama. From March to September 1863 he served as a hospital steward. On November 7, 1864, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant. Albert was mustered out of service with Company C on December 31, 1864 at Chattanooga, Tennessee. On August 20, 1867 he received the brevetted rank of captain dating back to September 20, 1863. In recognition of “distinguished personal gallantry displayed by him in battle of Chickamauga, Georgia where after the fall of his captain he took position in advance of his company and by his heroic example and words encouraged his comrades, though hard pushed on all sides, to maintain their ground." |

Emmonson was born in Norway Township (Racine County) and was a member of Company C of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War. He was cited for bravery in the battle at Chickamauga in 1863. |
