James Garland Sturgis

Portrait of James Garland Sturgis in his West Point(?) cadet uniform. Born January 24, 1854; son of Samuel Davis Sturgis I and younger brother of Nina Sturgis Dousman; James Sturgis attended the West Point Military Academy from 1871 to 1875. After graduation he reported to Fort Rice, Dakota Territory and was assigned to Company M, Seventh Cavalry for his first tour of duty. He died June 25, 1876 with Custer and the Seventh Cavalry at the Little Big Horn River in Montana. |

The Villa Louis Collection documents the family of Louis and Nina Dousman during the latter quarter of the nineteenth century. The Dousman family, descendants of fur trade magnate Hercules Dousman, cultivated the life of country aristocracy and amassed the trappings of Victorian wealth and grandeur along the banks of the Mississippi River. |
